The Concurrent Working of Deep Opposites

where two met

The above title was a phrase used by English Bishop HCG Moule in his commentary on 2 Cor 4:8-12.

We are simultaneously being put to death (death of self) and being raised up into new creation power, joy and peace by God. This is the cross of Christ. It is a collision of two paradoxical opposites which takes us to a third place of transcendence. We are enabled to transcend our problems while still in the midst of them. Be we must hold this tension when we are caught in it. This is what it means to take up the cross daily. We are not to try to escape this tension. Transformation only takes place in this tension. Don’t transmit your pain. Allow God to transform it. Somebody humiliates you. Instead of lashing out or getting even, hold this within believing God will use it to grow you toward maturity.

We are knocked down but not destroyed. Persecuted but not abandoned. 2 Cor 4:8-9.

We only abound spiritually as we are abased. Phili 4. We hold within this creative tension. We die and rise with Christ. We stand there in the gap between the two creations, old and new, and embrace the cross. We are stretched out on the cross but only here can we empty out old self and be filled with God. Only here can we be uprooted from the world and planted deeper into the death then resurrection of Christ. Only here can we suffer our way with Christ into glory. Rom 8:17. Only here, in the midst of the bad, can all things work together for good! Only as we die can life spring up in others. 2 Cor 4:12. Only as we are delivered over to death can we manifest the life of Christ. We must hold these paradoxical opposites as over against trying to escaping the tension or lashing out against it.

We must take pleasure in our infirmities and stresses. 2 Cor 12:9-10. We must not be disappointed when God refuses to remove the thorn in our flesh. He has it there for a resurrection purpose: to keep us humble. Let it do its work!

As the bad things come our way we do not retaliate; we hold the creative tension knowing that God is also working to bring good out of the situation. The new creation personality comes out of holding the creative tension.

Key verse is 2 Cor 4:11 where Paul personifies “death,” stating we are delivered over into the hands of an enemy, “death.” We will bring into this discussion Acts 27:41 “where two seas met” and also, the “abased” and “abound” verses in Philippians 4.

What is the Gospel?

what is gospel

There are 4 parts:

God WITHDRAWS His protective hedge from around you and allows Satan to take you and put you on the cross of suffering circumstances as God did with Job. Job 1; 2 Cor 4:11; Gal 2:20. You are thereby rendered helpless and hopeless with only one place to look for help: up to God!

God allows this cross to come to you for a good and REDEMPTIVE purpose: that thru “the faith of Jesus Christ” (Gal 2:16) you will embrace the cross and consent to die to self then be raised up by God to a new life as a new creation person in Christ, fully equipped with God’s resurrection life, power, thoroughly enabled now to live your life for God. Satan is always the killer. John 10:10; 8:44; God, thru faith, raises the dead. Rom 6:3-7; Rom 12:1-2. Thru this death, and only thru this death, we are freed from slavery: bondage to Satan, the mosaic law (Gal 3:10-13), the old self, the sin nature within us and the world’s influence over us. “Loose him and let him go.” John 11:44. The death brought on by Satan is the very same vehicle that frees us from the devil’s power over our life. Heb 2:14. To be born again we must first be killed. John 3:14-16.

God suffers with us as we go through this death to self at Satan’s hands working through his earthly minions and his calamitous circumstances. John 11:35. Christ is with us as we endure this death. We are crucified with Christ. Gal 2:20. Daniel 3:25.

Satan and the people he uses to crucify us are destroyed by the very same cross they put us on. Evil is thereby allowed to run its course and self-destruct. Ps 7:15-16; 9:15-16; Heb 2:14; 1 Cor 2:6-8; Col 2:14-15.

Through this gospel, we are enabled to love and bless our enemies because we have come to see them as the very blacksmith’s tools of our salvation, both initially and continually. We love our persecutors. We have only two commandments, love God and love others, especially our enemies. All other rule-keeping becomes a byproduct of these two. God is love and we become lovers like Him.

Works and rule keeping are the fruit, never the means, of the salvation process.

In summary, salvation is something that happens to you, not something you do. All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose. Rom 8:28. All the bad things Satan does to us God will take and reverse back against Satan and turn into our victory thru and only thru the Cross of Christ.

I would add that part 1 could be God striving to restrain evil in the hearts of someone. Gen 6:3. At some point God will drop His restraining influence and allow us to be taken over by our own sinful lustful proud desires. See Rom 1:24, 26 and 28. We are delivered over to the wrath and self-punishment of our own sinful desires. We fall into the depths of depression, anxiety and despair. We are here also rendered helpless and hopeless. We then proceed to part 2 of the four parts or we go on on our path to self-destruction.

Get into God’s Word.

Saint, what Bible verse(s) are you memorizing today?

None of this will happen by accident. You must make Jesus and therefore His Word the absolute highest priority of your life!

God’s Word will never get into you – until you get into it.

You’ve rebelled long enough. Immediately memorize: Job 12:23; Psalms 119:89, 105, 130; Proverbs 4:4; 13:13; Jeremiah 15:16; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17; 1 Peter 2:2

Writing out each verse with Bible reference on index cards will exponentially increase your ability to memorize. You do not and never have lacked ability but rather application. “Study” means to diligently devour and learn (2 Timothy 2:15). Now is your moment to repent and confess your sins and excuses. Denounce all of this satanic pablum spewed by those who desire for you to remain ignorant and dumb.

Get a King James Bible. Never mind the lying excuses of not being able to understand it. That is a diabolical myth. God’s Word is self-interpretative to those who study it.
